If you have never tried to buy cheese online or from Croome Cheese, it is natural to wonder what happens to your order before it reaches your door. We are a family-run business on the outskirts of Worcester, and our chief cheesemaker, Gary, makes all the cheese we send out. In this guide, we take you behind the box, share what to look for when buying cheese online and explain how to keep your cheese fresh once it arrives.
A few simple checks make buying cheese online far easier. These are the things we would look at first.
Look for artisan producers and check where the cheese comes from and how it is made. Our story begins just over 100 years ago, when the Hodgetts family started farming on the Croome Estate.
Today, our family team makes cheese in Worcestershire, and we have won awards including the International Cheese and Dairy Awards, the British Cheese Awards and the Great Taste Awards. We source local ingredients wherever we can, and we use Lea & Perrins Worcester sauce, which is made around a mile away from us.
Buying purely on price is an easy mistake to make. Quality, origin and the way the cheese is made all matter too, which is why we are happy to share how we work.
Older cheese has a stronger flavour. Mature cheddar is a great all-rounder for cooking, while vintage cheddar is crumbly with crunchy crystals and a favourite for cheeseboards. Our Worcestershire Gold is a premium vintage cheddar if you fancy trying one.
Cheese by post can feel like a leap of faith, so here is what happens on our side.
Every order is collated, packed and despatched from our despatch cold room. Our warehouse manager, Jack, looks after this, while our operations director, Andy, oversees the making, packing and despatch of our cheeses.
We make our cheeses as waxed truckles, eco-friendly wedges and 1.5kg rounds. If you would like a different size, get in touch and one of our friendly team will help.
Our cheeses are perishable, so a little care goes a long way once you have the box.
Put your cheese in the fridge as soon as it arrives. Properly stored in the fridge, cheddar can last several weeks, and harder, aged varieties tend to keep for longer. Our guide to British cheddar has more on how different ages behave.
Allergen and ingredient information is on each product page and on the packaging, so take a quick look before you tuck in.
If your order arrives damaged or is not what you ordered, email us at info@croomecheese.co.uk within 48 hours of delivery. If we approve a refund, it goes back to your original payment method within 5 to 10 business days. You can also call our team on 01905 350 788.
Now you know what happens behind the box, you can browse our full range and buy cheese online with free UK delivery on orders over £30. Try Whittington Oak, naturally smoked over oak logs in our smoker on the farm, or Ginger Blossom, made with honey from our own bees and crystallised ginger. Contact us if you have a question first, our team is always happy to chat.
